Overview

One of the most popular stretches of coastline in South Africa is found in the area of Margate, on the south coast of Durban. It has many wonderful and varied Margate accommodations on offer, from four star guest houses, to self-catering chalets. As Margate airport has the second largest runway in KwaZulu Natal, it is suitable if you're hoping to fly in and explore the town and surrounding areas, as Margate is a good 'home' base. The river which flows through Margate into the sea, is called Nkhongweni, meaning 'place of entreaty' in English, and the name is rumoured to have come from a time when the very difficult native inhabitants made travellers literally beg for hospitality and entrance into the area.

Surfing

Margate accommodation offers visitors the chance to relax in luxury, or enjoy a self-catering approach, due to the amount of guest houses, chalets, b&b's, and backpackers available in the area. With so much to do and see, it's difficult to say what are the best activies available if you've only booked a short stay at your Margate accommodation. If you're interested in learning how to surf, then pop round to Learn 2 Surf, where a friendly local will show you all the moves, and tricks so you feel confident when you do take to the water – and since Learn 2 Surf is affiliated with many of the local Margate surf shops, ask them if you'd like to purchase any surfing equipment, and they may even be able to wrangle you a small discount. If history and museums peak your interest, then make sure to stop in the Margate Art museum, which houses varied pieces, all of which are made in KwaZulu Natal – and they attempt to show the diverse and varied cultural influences.

Perfect for a picnic

Just outside of Margate Country club, lies the River Valley Nature Reserve, which offers beautiful picturesque walks through the grasslands, as well as river and coastal forests. The multitude of , birdlife and chance to spot small game, keeps you on your toes, and should you weary of walking, stop for a riverside picnic – or spend a night camping out under the stars, or enjoy a leisurely horse ride. The Margate aquarium offers fun and wonder for the whole family. Apart from camping at the River Valley Nature Reserve, there are plenty of upper class hotels if you're looking for luxury, while b&b's, backpackers and guest houses abound, so you can choose what Margate accommodation will best suite your budget.
